This all has started during the pandemic. Dr. Whitney Bowe understood the importance of a routine that included some step in which our skin can recovery from all the active agents used everyday in skincare schedules – such as retinoids, exfoliant and so on.

She believes (and we agree with her) that using too much products can actually do more harm than good, because our skin doesn’t have time to build her natural barriers. So she set up a skin care routine which favors the essential.

Skin Cycling is a routine that you can use this autumn instead of your usual one. It’s very simple to follow and it will take a list of few products.

You will have to balance your active and recovery nights as well as you do for your workouts when you add activities such as yoga or pilates. Hence the name “Skin Cycling”: you have to rotate some active nights in which you will use your beloved products and then some others in which you’ll let your skin rest.

The truth seems to be that you really need few products used in a proper way to obtain amazing results. Unbelievable isn’t it?

So which are these steps? Let’s start from those of the night time.

The Four-Night Cycle

Dr. Bowe suggests to start the cycle at the beginning of the week in order to have a better organization. It is based on a four-night cycle. Each night has a specific task as you can see in the picture.

The two recovery nights are necessary because exfoliation agents and retinoids should be paused to give your skin the chance to recover. In these night you have to focus on restore your skin with moisturizer and oils like, jojoba oil, coconut oil and so on.

Obviously the dermatologist says that this routine must be adopted for every skin type. If you have an oily skin it might take some more exfoliation rather than lots of moisturizers. A sensitive skin might need more attention in the recovery nights, without go heavy on retinoid and exfoliation in the first days.

The Morning routine

Dr. Whitney Bowe says to keep your morning routine predictable, without any cycling. Do not exaggerate in creativity and keep it simple.

She suggests:

  1. Cleanser;
  2. Vitamin C serum;
  3. A cream that protects skin’s barrier;
  4. SPF.
